ECO-HAMLETS |
| An old way of life for a new world |
In past times, before the rise of the big towns and cities, people lived in small communities, villages and hamlets, self-sufficient in food, water, and natural power, which mostly meant firewood. Today, it means electricity gathered from the sun, wind, water and ground. |

We believe that climate change makes it imperative that we change the way we live, especially in the countryside. Rural communities are rapidly losing their facilities, and are becoming second home ghettos or commuter villages that are empty during the day, while the ordinary rural people are unable to afford to buy a house in the place they live and work in. We believe the way forward is Small Sustainable Farm Communities, or Eco-Hamlets as we call them, a mediaeval community-based ideal updated to embrace the best of modern sustainable technology. These Eco-Hamlets will comprise a small group of affordable houses, available for sale or letting to those working locally or from home, all set in attractively landscaped semi-rural locations with their own workshop units. They will be self-sufficient in power and heat, harvest and recycle their water, and will be set within enough farmland to fill each home’s fruit, vegetable and meat needs. In addition they will have an equal amount of open green space, woods and lakes for the enjoyment of the residents and the wider community. Eventually we see these communities having their own shops, their own schools, even their own police stations, so that for the great majority of the time no-one has to go anywhere else, making these hamlets as Carbon Free as possible. An old way of life for a new world indeed. |
